“There’s one thing you have to know from the beginning—this is a love story.” Thus begins the true story of Harold Stevens, who joined the navy as a boy in the closing months of World War II, and during the occupation of Japan encountered a girl who would change his life forever. She was an elite geisha, one of the greatest cultural icons in Japanese society, and his infatuation marked the beginning of a singular journey encompassing forbidden passion, a bold crime, ruinous war, a man’s triumphs and tragedies, and in the end, an enduring love.

I loved this book. Harold Stevens, of the same WWII generation and character as my own irrascible father, chronicles his life through his unflinching acount of how he learned about love from a woman whose culture and status could not have been more different from his own, yet who against all odds became his wife for over sixty years. This is the best kind of love story, in my opinion: real life, with amazing synchronicities, deep devotion, dramatic risks, mistakes, lessons learned, regrets, transformations, and turns of event that would seem unbelievable, even in fiction. Harold, the storyteller, presents himself as unapologetically human, an ordinary man whose life became extraordinary, largely as a result of one unlikely encounter at a geisha house in postwar Tokyo.
I came to care deeply about Harold and his wife, through the skillfully woven, sensitive, humourous yet often poetic retelling of his life story. His co-author, David Pagel, has taken Harold's words and crafted a hard-to-put-down narrative, with his own presence as chronicler always appropriate, engaging, and illuminating. The book is a beautiful example of how meaning can be made of real life through storytelling, and how one man's love can survive death to touch others' hearts around the world.

The Forever Girl David Pagel Harold I Stevens 9780692806722 Books Reviews
I enjoyed the book, and found the technique of the narrator telling the story worked well. It was a love story as well as a historical tour through the WW II era.
I loved this book and highly recommend it. I think both sexes would enjoy. It was full of interesting history and how the US services operate at times. A thoughtful fun read.
Wonderful true story. An easy read, not just a love story but also very interesting bits about WWII and the Korean War. A good book for women and men alike. I was not particularly fond of Harold in the early years, but grew to admire him as the story unfolded. I would have considered myself very lucky if I would have been able to meet him. David Pagel's gleaning of Harold's story and putting in print was, IMHO, exceptional. It should be made into a movie.
I love true stories, and this is such a unique and powerful true story of what one will and can do when the heart fuels your actions and purpose in life. This book is well written and has done great justice to Hal's amazing, lifelong story and the woman who changed his life forever. I highly recommend it!!
A great read; really well written. Pagel is a master. He tells the true story of a GI storyteller who risked prison to buy the girl he loved. Gritty, honest--Harold Stevens hung on just long enough to hold the book in his hand. Then he left to join his Geisha sweetheart of 57 years. It's a book I'll read again.
A memoir. From a small troublesome boy, Harold grew up to become a fearless soldier during the World War II, posted in East Asia. From the atrocities of the war to the discovery of the new cultures to the heart-warming ever-lasting love between Harold and his lover and friendship, this book has it all. Tears, tears and well, tears... A roller-coaster of emotions happiness, sadness, fear, anticipation, compassion, pity, and even anger but also, forgiveness. It almost feels like you live Harold's story by his side. The author David Pagel has really done a great job. Great writing. It was heart-breaking to leave the book. This book is not solely a biography of an American soldier, but also the life of a man who has loved dearly, despite the struggles, despite the distance, despite the circumstances, despite everything else. Definitely worth the read!
Being a native Duluthian, this was a fascinating read! Even though Harold grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, long before I did, I could imagine what his life was like on the poorer side of town. The sacrifices that Harold gave for his beloved "Mike" were amazing and illustrated his belief that she made him a better man. I highly recommend this book as a fascinating true story of Harold's love and devotion to his geisha, the people of Japan, and the sacrifices he made to serve his country for so long. He was truly one of the the Greatest Generation and a man who found that love was the greatest salvation! I wish I had met him.
