READ AT YOUR OWN RISK ...
The last place Christopher Jacobs, aka X, thought he’d find himself was behind bars. Ten years later, the boy he used to be is gone. In his place is the shell of a man with murder under his belt. Any emotion he once had was left under the gavel when he was given life in prison. That is until the new nurse in the infirmary joins the block.
Putting your hands on a prison employee will get you the hole, but some things are worth their punishment, and something tells him Lyla will be worth more than he bargained for.

Lyla Evans isn’t sure about her new job at a maximum security prison, but showing uncertainty and weakness isn’t an option. Taking care of murders and rapist isn’t ideal, but survival is key. She’s warned ahead of time about a prisoner named X, but when she’s attacked, it’s the dangerous X that saves her. Fraternizing with the prisoners is forbidden, but sometimes the most forbidden things are the sweetest.

**WARNING** This book is NOT for the faint of heart. If you have issues reading about abuse (physical or mental) then please DO NOT read this book. 18+ for sexual content, language, and violence.

Slammer edition by Tabatha Vargo Romance eBooks

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book because I haven't ever read anything like it before. I am such a huge fan of Tabatha's work so I decided to give it a try and let me tell you, I am so glad I did. This book blew me away. I was so captivated by Christopher Jacobs "X" story and Lyla's. Lyla is a recent nursing school graduate who is having trouble finding a job. She ends up getting a job at one of the roughest maximum security prisons. To say her job is difficult, is an understatement. She's constantly scared for her life and the inmates treat her horribly. She has heard the horror stories and been warned to stay away from the inmates and not let them get close. She abides by the rules, until she meets Christopher. He is a man of few words and she is instantly drawn to him. The attraction is mutual and over the course of the book, Christopher and Lyla begin to have a forbidden romance. Lyla doesn't believe that Christopher could have done the things he did to end up in prison. She truly believes he is innocent and begins to stir up trouble as she fights to get his case reopened. This brings a world of trouble into the prison for both Christopher and Lyla and it becomes clear that she needs to quit because her life is in danger. This book literally took me on an emotional rollercoaster and the ending is one you won't see coming. I'm still shocked about how it all ended and I'm still thinking about it and hoping and praying that Tabatha will write a sequel to the book!

I don't even know where to begin.. I found this book by accident and I assumed it was going to be one of those cliché stories, but I bought and read it anyways. Boy am I glad I did... I dove right into X and Lyla's world feeling pain, fear and heart break. The last few chapters and the final sentence were jaw dropping. I didn't see that ending at all! The writing is very descriptive which got a little boring at times but I could definitely picture where each scene took place and what was happening. Because the story switches from lylas point of view and ex's point of view there are a few gaps in the story that leave it to the readers imagination

SPOILERS--------

My biggest question is how officer Douglas ended up in Lyla's apartment?

And my heart goes out to scoop!!

This isn't my first time reading a novel where a character suffers from dissociative identity disorder so I thought I wouldn't be surprised when I stumbled across another one. But man! Slammer is a must read!
I went into this book blind having only read the blurb. I was skeptical of the story line, an inmate and a prison worker. I expected a cheesy unrealistic story. I was so wrong. I was sucked in with the first chapter and read it in one sitting! I commend Tabatha for her obvious research on the life of prisoner. I was shocked that this story gave me feels for a murder. I was nervous for Christopher and Lyla's relationship. The plot twist at the end took my breath away, but really it was how the book should have ended. A HEA just wouldn’t have been right. The epilogue? Chills. I got chills and sat pondering how Lyla’s life turned out. There were some dark scenes within the story that people won’t enjoy but life in prison isn’t rainbows and HEA’s. This is a unique story and I recommend giving it a chance!
Many days (and many books) have passed since I’ve read “Slammer” yet I still can’t seem to get this remarkable story out of my mind. At first I didn’t want to write a review because I knew I would have a difficult time choosing the right words but I figured this is the only way to move on from this story. Needless to say, the only way to describe “Slammer” is that it was an “extreme shock to my system.”

The reason why I picked up this book in the first place was because one of my closest BFF’s recently accepted a position as a correctional nurse and I was mostly curious. I wanted to know just how true to life this story could possibly be and I’m happy to say that the author did well with chronicling the details.

The kicker in the story was the characters. Lyla might have been annoyingly naive but at the same time this trait revealed her compassion. I liked that she acknowledged the best that she saw in these hard people especially in the case of “X”. And while I in no means agree with many of her decisions – her choices admittedly contributed in delivering such an interesting story.

From the very beginning, I thought that Christopher’s character was intriguing. Talk about being multi-dimensional … “X” definitely had it in spades. I’m trying my best to not give anything away, but I tell you this, you will come to fall for a certain side of him and as soon as you do you will unexpectedly feel 100% opposite.

Overall, the pairing between the two was great. Lyla brought out the goodness in X and in return he gave her the devotion that she was searching for. I appreciated that even if their relationship was brief they still were able to demonstrate this deeper love and passion for each other.

Despite all the odds, I was convinced that I really wanted them to succeed. This was why I was heartbroken with how the story conclude. I will tell you this, though – that unexpected ending was the undisputable reason why this book moved me.

If you’re looking for an original, intriguing and unconventional romance try this one out. I assure you, “Slammer” will not disappoint.
