This is a sparkling new translation of the Life of St. Christina the Astonishing by the Dominican preacher and theologian Thomas of Cantimpré. Written in 1232, just eight years after her death, it recounts the sometimes spectacular exploits of Christina in her native village of St. Trond, Belgium and its environs. Regarded in her youth as demon-possessed and cruelly persecuted because of her strange behavior, in the course of time Christina came to be revered by her fellow townsmen as a holy woman and prophetess. It is a powerful and provocative story told by Thomas of Cantimpré in a crisp and vivid style. The original Latin text is included.

Some saints you feel closer too because they just get it. They’ve been there and lived through exactly what you’re going through. St. Christina was not given a physical illness to redeem souls, but a mental illness. Her life is hard to imitate—unless the Lord has also given you that particular cross. Granted, there is much in her life that can’t be imitated but by God’s miraculous hand. However, her life gives a witness on how to bear the suffering of mental illness for the salvation of souls. Here is a saint who gets it. A saint who lived it. Experienced it. Here is a saint that gives hope that mental illness can be used for redemptive suffering. Her story has given me much to reflect and meditate on, and a friend to turn to on dark days.

The Life of St Christina the Astonishing eBook Thomas de Cantimpré Mark Reynolds Reviews

excellent product and service. Would definitely order again
Seen through modern eyes this work of Thomas of Cantimpré seems a complete literary fiction with little connection to reality. Its overall tone is dark, bordering on the horrific. And yet its author and his audience in the 13th century, and for many centuries afterward, regarded it as not only a true historical account but even as a work of moral edification, providing examples for them to imitate.

We see unfold the life and miracles of Christina, a young medieval woman with physical and mental disabilities, who struggles initially to simply survive among her fellow townsmen, and then, after overcoming the ignorance and cruelty with which mental illness is always confronted, even succeeds in commanding their admiration and respect. It is fascinating to see how thin a line separates mental instability from sanctity and genius.

Another of the work's many attractions is being able to enjoy Thomas's shameless and virtuosic use of those rhetorical tricks, sophistical arguments and dramatic effects which are so dear to doctrinaires, politicians and demagogues of every era.

Mr. Reynolds has performed an excellent job in spotting, stablishing the latin text and translating it with the outmost fidelity and terseness into contemporary english. We should congratulate him for such a feat and wish a similar fate to the thousands and thousands of pages of past times that are waiting to tell us many other revealing aspects of the unfolding of humanity.
This is a strange and fascinating story from the Middle Ages. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The translator has included the Latin text at the end of his translation for those wishing to view the original.
Extremely interesting, but somewhat disturbing. Glad I read it though.
Beyond your wildest dreams ! Christina was truly amazing and this account captures the incredible details of her life. Certainly an inspiration for your spiritual life.
I had never even heard of this Saint. What an awesome story!!! This was an easy read and wonderful story to share,
This is a very odd woman and an odd little biography originally written in Latin in the 13th century. She flies through the air, cavorts madly with her source in heaven, and suffers terrible torments on behalf of mankind. it may be that superstition and exaggeration inform this account as it was written in the distant past within a very different cultural context. Even so, it is a memorable tale of a strange life that will remain with me for some time.
